(Almost) Complete Camel of Doom setlists! And in depth history of the earliest days!

I just stumbled upon this whilst crawling the net… it was on a secret website I used to maintain to disseminate information about various Camel of Doom related activities. Not sure how or why it is still online, but it is. Unfortunately the file host for it was not, meaning the lost bootlegs that it linked to are still lost.

What we DO have here though, is an almost complete list of all Camel of Doom gigs ever performed, complete with dates, locations, set lists and line-ups.

If my memory serves (bear in mind this was 7 years ago!) we played one final gig at  both the Talbot and the Rigger. I know we played the rigger again because I have photos with a Clayton/Sadler/Whittingham/Potts/Symmonds line up that never played together elsewhere. And I’m SURE we played the talbot another time because I can remember doing a cover of Neurosis/Locust Star there… although that might have been Soundcheck only, who can say…

Musician wise, you will recognise Clayton/Sadler/Whittingham/Potts as the main line up. Alex Hutchison was a good friend of mine and Toms. He was the original guitarist, as I was actually the bass player! Carl Brunsden was our music teacher at school. He played sax at a gig Rosie couldn’t make. Phil Symmonds played with us a few times on Keys.

Material wise, some of these songs have names listed here that wern’t put out on the actual record (I believe the unofficial record containing them was called ‘Unreleased 1’). Wakeham was never released on a studio record, but the gig we first played it at is floating around as a bootleg. The Diviners sage was a TOTAL improv/jam the few times it was performed. I think it got a lot better by the time the album came out.

And now… drumroll… from the same source, comes the very badly written, extremely biased and slightly offensive to some former members HISTORY OF THE BAND prior to anything anyone knows about us. It mentions lots of things never previously mentioned. It also accurately states that the band was formed in 2002, not 2001 as state elsewhere. Cue the 10th anniversary celebrations this July! I wish I still had some of the unreleased material here, but I don’t so don’t ask 😦 NB. This history was written at the time, so is accurate, however it is also being written by an ignorant teenager, so it isn’t going to win any prizes.

July 2002 – Disgruntled (pissed off) with his band, Retribution, Kris Clayton forms The Band with Rocks In with himself on bass, Tom Sadler on guitar and Alex Hutchison on drums. Kris records “The Song with Rocks In” as a demo

August 2002 – Tom and Alex switch place – to their natural instruments! as they cudn’t play each others instruments at all. The band change their name to Camel of Doom

September 2002 – camelofdoom.com appears. Kris starts work on an EP

October 2002 – “Child of the Scream EP” is released.

November 2002 – Work starts on the debut album.

December 2002 – The band perform “Child of the Scream” to 10 people. It goes down well. They sucked.

January 2003 – Kris leaves Retribution to go full-time Camel. “The Desert at Night” is released. Martyn Godber (MBGV) is added on Keyboards.

March 2003 – “The Spice Extends Life, The Spice Expands Conciousness” is recorded. It is never released. Alex is removed from the band, and Martyn leaves. Kris switches to guitar. The band now have no bass player, although Ben Nield is rumoured to be joining.

July 2003 – Kris gets drunk and invites Ross Drummond to join on lead guitar. Still no bass player.

August 2003 – Work starts on the 2nd album. With no bass player.

October 2003 – Kris releases a solo album called “Distorted Sound Patterns”

January 2004 – Ben Nield is officially added on bass. Ross is sacked. “The Desert at Night – Special Edition” is released.

February 2004- First new tracks in 13 months appear on camelofdoom.com. “The Pyschedelic Jam” is recorded. It hasn’t yet been released. Bens solo album “Futurus” comes out.

March 2004- Matt Cliffe joins on rythm guitar. Ben Nield later leaves on extremly friendly agreed terms. Matt is sacked. On not very friendly unagreed terms. Matt is shortest ever (read that how you like) member of Camel of Doom.

April 2004-Laura Whittingham is added on Bass and Rosie Potts on Sax.

May 2004-Debut gig at the Talbot goes down very well.

July 2004-The ‘Camel do some good gigs with some cool bands and start writing longer more complex songs.

September 2004-The band play a charity gig at The Talbot for Macmillan Cancer Care
